Languages in the Jewish Community of Hohenems

Public guided tour through the permanent exhibition (in German)

There was a Jewish community in Hohenems for more than three hundred years. Cultural adaptation and change in language led to the integration of jews into the christian majority at the end of the 18th century. The traditionally spoken West-Jiddish was replaced by the German language and the Hebrew liturgy complemented by German parts. In addition, foreign languages were indispensable because of the wide commercial and family network. Follow us throught the permanent exhibition of the Jewish Museum and learn about the background and significance of different languages in the jewish Hohenems.

„Odd. A glimpse into the holdings – on the 25th anniversary of the Jewish Museum Hohenems“

For the past 25 years, the Jewish Museum Hohenems has been gathering witnesses of Jewish history in Vorarlberg, Tyrol, and the greater Lake Constance area. All objects that find their way into the museum’s collection signify discontinued history. So do all the letters from a jewish family, which served as insulation material and were found while reconstructing a building. They testify to lively communication, first in West-Jiddish then in German, first with Hebrew then with Latin letters. The exhibition provides an insight into language change and the wealth of various forms of memory and oblivion whose material traces are preserved in the museum’s collection.
