Cultural information booths about culinarik, architecture and language

Date: Sunday, September 13rd, 2020

Time: 13:00

Address: Neupfarrplatz

Cultural Information Booths:

1. Architecture
The guests will get an insight into Jewish architecture. Synagogues belong to the so-called sacral buildings. Sacral architecture (lat ""sacer"" = holy) is the collective term for all buildings that serve cultic and religious purposes. Synagogues (Greek ""assembly, association"") are the sacred buildings of Jewish architecture - the worship buildings of Jewish communities oriented towards the Temple Square in Jerusalem. The construction of the new synagogue in Regensburg and the 1998 excavations on Neupfarrplatz, the medieval Jewish settlement, are also discussed.

Cooperation and contact person on site:
Architect Stephanie Reiterer

2. Culinary delights
Kosher - what is that exactly? Which foods are allowed? How must the food be prepared? You will learn more about holidays, why and how they are celebrated.Jewish cuisine is characterized by culinary diversity. There is not THE Jewish cuisine. Influences from Eastern Europe, the Middle East and also America have greatly modernized traditional cuisine. Jewish cuisine is very strongly anchored with the Jewish holidays. Members of the Jewish community prepare a selection of dishes for tasting. Visitors are welcome to taste, ask questions and exchange ideas. Recipes are available to take away.

Note: Currently we are working on a cookbook that will contain not only recipes but also personal stories from members of the Jewish community in Regensburg.

Cooperation and contact person on site:
Mrs. Elena Semmler, Jewish Community and Cultheca Prof. Dr. Waldherr

3. Language and literature
The third focus of the event is the topic ""Language and Literature"". Many words that are still in use today have their origin in the Yiddish or Hebrew language. A selection of Yiddish classics, Jewish legends, illustrated books, etc. awaits you at an information booth as illustrative copies. You can also try out the writing of the Yiddish language yourself.
