From the European Day of Jewish Culture to the European Route of Jewish Heritage

November 24th and 25th, 2012. The city of Girona will welcome a group of experts coming from different European countries such as France, Italy, Slovenia, Portugal, Czeh Republic, Luxembourg and Spain, to work on the European Route of Jewish Heritage.

The seminar will be focused on two main topics: on one hand, the preservation and use of heritage in the framework of the European Cultural Routes, which the AEPJ has been developing these last years under the guidance of the Council of Europe. On the other hand the improvement and promotion of the European Day of Jewish Culture, a project shared between more than twenty European countries, which this year has celebrated its 13th edition.

The European Route of Jewish Heritage was declared Major Cultural Route by the Council of Europe in 2005. One of the aims of this seminar is to put together the different initiatives of the participant countries, to get acquainted with models of good practice and to coordinate a common program. The Network of Spanish Jewish Quarters contributes to this seminar its valuable experience in the management of cultural tourism.

In short, the seminar expects to consolidate the European platform for presenting and promoting the public the historical, artistic, cultural, architectural and urban legacy of the Jewish heritage, as well as to encourage the research and study.

A visit to the ancient Jewish quarters of Girona, Besalú and Castelló d'Empúries, which will allow the participants to expand their knowledge on our history and Jewish heritage, is also a part of the program.

The Mayor of Girona and Chairman of the Board Patronat Call de Girona, Mr. Carles Puigdemont, and the President of the European Association for the Preservation of Jewish Heritage (AEPJ), Mr. François Moyse, will open the workshop at the Bonastruc ça Porta Centre on Sunday.

This meeting, organised by the AEPJ, has counted on the collaboration of the Patronat Call de Girona, the Girona City Council, the Tourist Board Girona-Costa Brava and the Network of Spanish Jewish Quarters.
