Siracusa,1924. Alessio Mainardi, a student from Sicily?s countryside who moves to the city to attend high school, contacts young fascists who rebel against bourgeois values and hierarchies. Alessio falls in love with a companion, Giovanna, from whom she receives a red carnation, the symbol of love. Alessio retains the carnation and the fascist students make fun of him. Influenced by his friend Tarquino, he engages in violent acts and is forced to return home, where his ideas evolve. Back in the city the new guests of the hostel where he is staying, young communists try to attract him to his group. And guided by Tarquino enters for the first time in a brothel. Alessio knows that he will never see Giovanna again and that he will no longer have contact with his fascist friends.
