International Holocaust Remembrance Day in Girona, Spain

Event celebrated in the City Council of Girona in January 27 2017

The Girona City Council and the Patronat Call de Girona organized on January 27 2017 an event on occasion of the International Holocaust Remembrance Day. With the participation of representatives of several associations from public and private institutions, this was a very moving event in which we recalled, family and friends among the milions of Jews and other victims of the Holocaust.

The speaker on this occasion was writer Mrs. Dory Sontheimer (author of “Las siete cajas”). She transmitted to the audience her personal experience and had a very special memory and recognition to all victims. To close her speech, Mrs. Dory Sontheimer quoted these words by Nobel Peace Prize Elie Wiesel: “I swear never to be silent whenever and wherever human beings endure suffering and humiliation. We must always take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented. Today, the greater cruelty is indifference. To know but not to act is a form to consent injustice.”

At the end of the event, commemorative candles where lit by local authorities, presided by the Mayoress, council deputies, authorities from the autonomous government of Catalonia (Generalitat), both from Presidency and Education departments, as well as representatives from Catalan friendly associations of the Camps of Mathausen and Ravensbrück.
